The Golden Rhyton (drinking horn) from Persia's Achaemenid period, 546
- 330 B.C. It was excavated at the city of Hamadan (Ecbatana).
Hamadan is known as "Older Than History," one of the
oldest continuously occupied cities in the world, and is located about 290
km southwest of Tehran. Situated at the foot of Mount Alvand, Hamadan
lies at an elevation of over 1,830 m.
The first Median capital was founded in Hamadan (called Ecbatana by
Greeks) around the ninth century B.C. Cyrus the Great, the first
Achaemenid king defeated the last Median king. Under the Persian
kings, Hamadan, became the summer capital of Persia (559-330 B.C.).
The original piece is kept at the National Museum of Iran in Tehran.
